Weddings are usually surrounded by a lot of customs – many of which we have dearly stuck to throughout the ages, without actually knowing the meaning behind them. For example, do you know why wedding rings are worn on the 4th finger of the left hand? If not, read on because this is something truly interesting:
- In Ancient Greece and Rome, people believed that the vein on the 4th finger of the left hand was the one which led directly to the heart. Hence, they wore their wedding rings on these fingers, to symbolize powerful, eternal love. Sure, science may disapprove with this theory – but at the end of the day, it is the beautiful symbol behind it we all love.
- The Chinese also developed a theory about why we wear our wedding rings on the 4th They say that each of the fingers represents a generation in the family (the thumb stands for your parents, the index for your siblings, the middle finger for you, the ring finger for your loved one and the pinky for your children. If you bend the middle fingers of each of your hands and bring the knuckles together while allowing the other fingers to touch each other, you will notice that you can separate all of your left hand fingers from the right hand ones – but you cannot separate the ring fingers. This means that you and your loved one are meant to be together forever, while you and your parents, siblings and children will separate from each other at some point in life. Emotional, isn’t it?
- The rings are worn on the left hand because it is believed that, since most people are right-handed, wearing the ring on the left one will protect it from damage in time. However, there are some cultures where the ring is worn on the right hand precisely because it is the dominant one – thus symbolizing the power of love.
