Thanks to all of the brides, grooms, moms, dads, aunts, uncles, and everyone who visited us yesterday at The Great Bridal Expo at the Bahia Mar! We loved meeting all of you and hearing your stories about how you fell in love, how he proposed, and all of the details about your upcoming weddings.

Should you choose a Rabbi or Interfaith Officiant?

Rabbi Evan Moffic recently wrote about why he chooses to perform interfaith ceremonies, even though some of his colleagues don’t:

Still, many rabbis resist officiating at interfaith weddings. Some see officiation as giving intermarriage a rabbinic stamp of approval. Others see it as not within their purview of responsibility. Others think it contributes to assimilation and the decline of Jewish life in America.

I see it differently. Part of my job as a rabbi is to embrace interfaith couples and help make Judaism a compelling and important part of their lives. That means being their rabbi at the most sacred moment of life.

We agree with Rabbi Moffic that couples should be able to choose to have a rabbi present, but in the event that you can’t find a rabbi willing to perform your interfaith ceremony, what is a couple to do? Noted officiant JP Reynolds listed ten things he learned from officiating in 2012. Lots of them are good, but these are my five favorites:

• The greatest gift parents can give to their children are the words: “This is your wedding, so whatever you want is fine with us.” These generous, selfless words relieve pressure, diffuse tension and let a couple plan from a place of fun and enjoyment.
• There is no one “correct” way to celebrate your wedding — the only right way is the way that makes sense to you. Trust your instincts. Be creative. Be you.
• A groom needs to do more than just “show up.” I’m suspicious of a bride who doesn’t want input from her fiancé and I’m disappointed with a groom who is too above it all to have an opinion. If your wedding is not your shared vision, then I’m really not sure you can have a shared vision of your life together.
• You don’t have to believe in God to have a ceremony that is warm, gracious, inviting and that celebrates you as a couple.
• It is also possible to create a ceremony that honors different cultures and traditions in a way that unites rather than divides all present. It is possible to weave varying traditions in a way that doesn’t create “dueling deities” or one-upmanship.

What is a cultural wedding ceremony?

By my definition, a cultural wedding ceremony is one in which you celebrate the cultural background of the bride and groom (whether similar or different) by including parts of traditions that might be special to either or both.

How can I have a cultural wedding ceremony?

In her blog entry on the Huffington Post, Lidia Bastianich talks about the many ways that you can celebrate your culture on your wedding day. Of particular interest is her mention of how you can have a cultural wedding ceremony:

The ceremony – Are there poems, vows or quotes that are particular to your heritage? Add them to the ceremony and highlight them in your program; make note in the program of the origins and history of the words you include. Ask whoever is marrying you to highlight it as well. In the Korean wedding tradition, for example, special attention is paid by the bride to the groom’s parents.
